I don't know how people can live without scanners. I scan most papers I receive and throw them in a huge box. (It's called 'chronological' filing. By date of arrival.) If I ever need it, it is in my hard disk. But, I've accumulated too many scanners. I'm going to keep only one.
Canon N1220U. Gray scale and 42-bit color, 1200 x 2400 DPI max optical resolution. Max scan size 8 1/2 by 11 inches. USB interface. The neat thing about this scanner is how compact it is and that it does NOT need a transformer (AC adapter). It gets its power from the USB cable. It is only 1 1/4 inches thick and weighs only 3.3 lbs. Very easy to take anywhere. I've used it a lot under Windows XP but drivers are available from Windows 95 on. $50.
Mustek BearPaw 1200TA: 600 x 1200 DPI maximum optical resolution interpolatable to 19,200 x 19,200. 48-bit color. USB interface. Maximum scan size 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Can scan film, slides, plain paper, and transparencies. Runs under Windows 9x thru Windows XP. I've only used it for plain paper scanning under Windows XP. $40
Mustek 1200 LP. 600 x 1200 DPI max resolution. This is an old scanner and it runs off the parallel port. One of the few options you have if you need to scan legal size stuff because most flat bed scanners will only do 8 1/2 by 11. Runs fine under Windows 2000 and Windows XP. $25.
