Acrobat READER is a free program but if you want to CREATE Portable Document (PDF) files then you have to have this program (or a clone). Once you install it, producing PDF files is as simple as printing what you need in the PDF files. (Acrobat makes a "PDF" printer appear in your list of printers. Printing to it creates the PDF file.)
This is not the current version but in the vast majority of cases it will be all you need and, naturally, it costs you much less.
